Getting Your Outdoor Space Ready for a Pennsylvania Winter

Freeze-thaw season is the hardest test an outdoor room faces all year. A few hours of work before the ground hardens saves far more than that in spring repairs.

Start with drainage

Every outdoor project begins and ends with water management. Clear leaf debris from trench drains, channel drains, and any low spot along the edge of a patio. Water that stands against a retaining wall or in a paver joint is water that will freeze, expand, and push things apart.

Winterize anything with a water line

If your outdoor kitchen, hose bib, or fire feature has a water supply, shut it down properly:

• Close the interior shutoff valve
• Open the exterior drain to clear the line
• Disconnect hoses and store them inside
• Cover exposed valves and backflow assemblies

A split line discovered in April is one of the most avoidable repairs we see.

Protect the finishes

• Sweep and hose patios before the first hard freeze so grit does not get ground in by snow removal
• Move ceramic and clay planters indoors, since freezing soil cracks them
• Seal natural stone in dry weather if it has been more than two seasons

Fix what is already loose

Late fall is the right time for small repairs, because the soil is still workable and crews are easier to schedule. Loose cap stones, a wobbly railing, a sagging step, or a paver that has heaved can all be corrected now instead of becoming a spring project.
